IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to The Animal League of Green Valley (TALGV), a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met.

In addition to the benefits of giving to TALGV, a QCD excludes the amount donated from taxable income, which is unlike regular withdrawals from a traditional IRA. Keeping your taxable income lower may reduce the impact to certain tax credits and deductions, including Social Security and Medicare.

Also, QCDs don’t require that you itemize, which due to the tax law changes, means you may decide to take advantage of the higher standard deduction, but still use a QCD for charitable giving.

How Do I Make a QCD to TALGV

  1. Communicate with your IRA Custodian where your IRA is held that you are interested in making a QCD to The Animal League of Green Valley, a 501(c)(3) tax qualified charity. Do this before the end of the tax year.
  2. Specify the dollar amount that you wish to donate. Remember, any amount that you donate over the minimum qualified distribution is taxable.
  3. Request the Custodian to make the check payable to TALGV. The Custodian will mail the check to TALGV for you in your name. It’s important that the check be made payable to TALGV and not to you.
  4. TALGV will automatically send you an acknowledgement letter for the donation. This is your receipt.
  5. Maintain the receipt for your tax records
  6. Report the QCD amount on your 1040 federal tax return
