Rusty has earned his AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate.

“Sweet, wonderful dog.” Big life changes (job and school) resulted in my person returning me to TALGV, but not before she wrote that nice description about me, and much more: “He let my young son crawl all over him. I’ve never seen him be aggressive.” And this: “Always friendly. Loves to go on runs/walks.” She said I barked when new people came onto the property, which can be good—especially because she added that I was “never aggressive.” Plus, she said I was housebroken. (One accident during the scary part of monsoon season.) Full disclosure: I’m a 2-1/2-year-old Heeler/Hound mix male and big favorite here because I’m such a loveable guy, albeit somewhat shy at first. And for me, it’s most important what you think. There once was a group of dogs who lived a hard knock life. I know because I was one of them. We had each other, but were never allowed in the house—no matter the weather. And even as puppies, we worked hard just to stay safe. Then, one magical day, our lives changed. Friendly, gentle people came to visit, brought us yummy treats, and helped us move. Today I live indoors, eat well, and sleep on a comfy bed. There’s a change in my heart, too, because now I dare to dream of my very own home—a place where people will want me to play, have fun, and share their happy, loving life. When I first came here, I didn’t know whether to cower in the corner or make a flying leap into the first friendly lap I saw. So I did a bit of both. I’m just an 8-month-old Heeler male, 35 pounds, accustomed to living with a family, including kids ages 3, 3 and 8. (Dad said I was good with the kids, even slept with them, but sometimes played rough—need some puppy education on how to always play nice.) Unfortunately, my family moved to a new apartment where I couldn’t go, so I need a new family—one wonderful person or more! I’m playful, still a little fearful and so not always friendly with new people, but very eager to love, learn, and live happily ever after. Could that please be with you?

Mom and Dad adopted me three years ago, back when I was just a pup. Since then I’ve learned some important things—how to walk on a leash, “ask” to go outside, follow commands—and recently I learned another lesson: Life can change suddenly. My dad died, and now mom is moving and can’t take care of me anymore. So I came here a little lonely and bashful, but kindness has really brightened my days. The volunteers say I’m elegant with lots of charm (sometimes they let me give them kisses), and although I’m tall (about 64 pounds), my former owner said I wasn’t a jumper, and can be good with kids. I’m a sweet and beautiful black Lab/Heeler/Greyhound mix female, who’d love to go home with you and be happy together forever.
